How Yoga Found Me
I was in my late twenties, had two kids, and my husband was on shore duty — a season of life that finally felt a little steadier than the others.
A little yoga studio opened up about five minutes from our townhouse in Point Loma military housing. You may have heard of it: CorePower Yoga. At the time, though, it wasn't as recognizable a franchise as it is today. It was just a neighborhood studio that offered classes that fit my schedule, the people were cool and the energy felt right. I got to know the teachers and the members; before long, they became a community that I didn't even realize I needed.
Motherhood was challenging, especially as a military spouse. And while I loved my military family and friends, so much of that community hinged upon me being a wife and mother. Those roles were meaningful and important — they were focused on the loves of my life. But I had lost touch with the parts of myself that existed outside of them. At CorePower, I was able to just be me again. Reclaiming ME time felt like reaching into the back of my closet and grabbing an old favorite sweater I hadn't worn in so long I almost forgot it was there.
I attended classes daily — early mornings before my husband left for work, after dinner, and on the weekends. I had been practicing yoga on and off for years and liked it, but now I craved it. Yoga made me feel strong. Whole. Sane. Things I wasn't always sure I felt. It was more than just an hour of movement and breathing — it was a way to reconnect and remember who I was beneath all the responsibilities I carried each day.
When CorePower offered its first Yoga Teacher Training, I passed. I didn't think I could fit it in — 200 hours was a lot of time and $2000 was a lot of money. And truthfully, I wasn't sure I would succeed. Almost immediately, I regretted it. So when they opened enrollment for the second training, I jumped in. And boy, I cannot imagine my life today if I hadn't.
I enrolled thinking I was doing it just for me. And I definitely was. But somewhere in the middle of that training, things came together in a perfect way. I realized how much I had gotten out of my yoga practice and from my yoga peeps. Yoga had given me strength during difficult seasons. It had given me confidence when I felt uncertain. It had given me community when I felt isolated. It had helped me reconnect with joy when life felt heavy. I knew I wanted to pass these gifts on to others — especially the people who hadn't felt those things in a while, just like I hadn't.
Saying “yes” to yoga teacher training changed everything. I thought I was signing up for a yoga certification. Instead, I was beginning a life-long journey of growing, evolving, and learning that I've been honored to share with so many others along the way — as a teacher, a student, a mentee, a mentor, and a friend. Yoga didn't just become something I practiced. It became part of who I am.
And in many ways, it feels like yoga found me exactly when I needed it most.

Maybe you're making BIG life decisions — changing careers, building a business, raising a family, caring for aging parents, or feeling the weight of life's responsibilities. Or maybe you're making all the seemingly little decisions every day and you have a quiet feeling that there's something more waiting for you: more joy, more purpose, more connection, more YOU.
The beautiful thing is that in reaching out to find your peeps, you don't have to figure it all out alone.
